The Paint tool in Revit can come in handy for certain faces (i.e.Also, if you have two materials (say, an aluminum tea kettle and aluminum window mullions) that could/should be the same but you might want to edit separately or change later, duplicate and rename the material, and apply the differently-named materials to the two objects (i.e.Model correctly from the start, and it will never be a problem. It is significantly easier to just change it in Revit and let it do the work for you. You would have to use an Edit Poly or Edit Mesh modifier in 3ds to apply materials separately to individual faces in the object, which is rather tedious. If you do not assign materials to certain things, they will be assimilated into the “Generic” Borg, and once that happens, good luck. All By Category/default materials will be grouped together. Note: All generic materials will be grouped together.Upon import into 3ds Max, the model will be split by materials thus, correctly assigning materials to objects in Revit can save you huge amounts of work later in 3ds.
